Match the electrical input limits first

The station's solar input has a permitted voltage range, current limit and maximum wattage. The panel array must stay inside those limits in all expected conditions. Maximum panel wattage alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.

  • Allow for voltage changes in cold weather

Panel rating is not daily energy

A 200 W panel does not normally deliver 200 W from sunrise to sunset. Cloud, shade, panel angle, heat, cable loss and the station's charging curve all reduce or vary the energy collected.

Estimate the daily energy balance

List the watt hours used by every device each day, then compare that demand with a conservative solar estimate. A system that replaces only part of the daily use will eventually run flat even if the display reaches a high charging rate at midday.

  • Include inverter losses
  • Allow for poor weather
  • Keep an emergency reserve

Parallel and series wiring change different values

Series wiring increases voltage while parallel wiring increases current. Never combine panels until the resulting array values are confirmed against the power station manual and the connectors are designed for that arrangement.

Place portable panels carefully

Keep the panel unshaded, ventilated and aimed toward useful sun. Repositioning a portable panel can materially improve yield. Protect cables from water, vehicle traffic and trip hazards.
