Mesh Wi-Fi buying guide for Australian homes

Choose between Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, and work out how many mesh units you need.

Fix placement before buying more units

A mesh node still needs a strong connection to the main router. Thick masonry, metal, mirrors and long distances can weaken the link. Place nodes between the router and the weak area, not inside the weak area.

  • Check whether wired backhaul is possible
  • Count available Ethernet ports
  • Confirm your NBN modem or connection type

Wi-Fi class is not your internet speed

AX3000, BE11000 and similar classes combine theoretical rates across bands. They do not promise that speed to one device or over your internet connection.

Backhaul affects multi-node performance

Mesh systems use wireless or Ethernet backhaul to connect nodes. A dedicated wireless backhaul band or wired Ethernet can preserve more capacity for phones, computers and televisions.

Check the ports

A fast wireless system can still be limited by gigabit Ethernet. If your internet plan, NAS or workstation exceeds one gigabit, compare the number and speed of multi-gigabit ports on both routers and satellites.

How many mesh units do I need?

Use the fewest units that provide strong overlap. More nodes are not automatically faster and badly placed nodes can repeat a weak connection.

Does Wi-Fi 7 improve every device?

Older devices can connect, but Wi-Fi 7-specific features require compatible client hardware and suitable network conditions.

Is wired backhaul better?

Ethernet backhaul is usually more predictable and preserves wireless capacity, but cable speed and port availability still matter.
